According to the National Park Service, Saturday’s death of a woman who was on a boat trip through the Grand Canyon in Colorado River was caused by current.

Sheetal Patel (47), a Chattanooga resident, was relaxing on a beach when she was caught in a current. Around 2 p.m., a report was received that someone was in water.

Patel was about to embark on a multi-day boating trip. The park service stated in a statement that Patel had made this announcement.

It said that the incident occurred near Pipe Creek Beach. She was later declared dead by the guides who reached her via boat.

She hiked in to meet Phantom Ranch, according to the park service, which is close Pipe Creek.

Two people were killed in separate accidents on trips to the Grand Canyon’s Colorado River in March and April this year.
