One successful home retrofitting project was recently completed in Dulzura, a town in San Diego County. The homeowner, Chris Bilbray, expressed gratitude for the work done, which would have taken his family years to complete on their own.
The home retrofitting included replacing the porch with fire-resistant lumber, installing ember-resistant attic vents, and creating a five-foot buffer zone free of flammable materials around the house. This comprehensive approach goes beyond defensible space and aims to reduce the overall fire risk in the community. Cal Fire is currently focusing on communities in San Diego, Lake, Shasta, and Siskiyou counties, with plans to expand the program to Tuolumne and El Dorado counties in the future.
