With my brother David, we have crowned the top of the majestic Pedraforca. For me it is my second time on this summit, with a height of 2506 meters. It is an incredible watchtower with 360-degree views, as seen in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.
The peculiar shape of this mountain has given rise to thousands of legends and is one of the most typical of Catalan hiking and mountaineering. In our case, we also take our pets to the peaks, as seen in the photograph.
It is also one of the mountains that needs the most rescues, since its steep slopes are dangerous. I have a lot of experience and I wanted to show my brother David the spectacular nature of this peculiar peak that is located in the Cadí – Moixeró Natural Park, specifically, in Berguedà.
Pedraforca has a very peculiar shape due to its two peaks separated by a large hill, which gives it its name. The northern summit is made up of two peaks: Pollegó Superior (2506 m) next to Calderer (2505 m). The south is made up of the Pollegó Inferior (2445 m).
It is a mountain formation that is especially attractive due to its U-shaped profile. It was formed about 25 million years ago. Wind and water erosion gave it its current shape at the top, which is composed of materials more sensitive to erosion. Additionally, periods of ice and thaw have progressively crumbled the rock, forming the famous Tartera on the south face.
The closest towns are Gósol and Saldes. In 1982, it was declared a natural site of national interest by the Parliament of Catalonia.
