The trial against eight residents of Raval accused of basically throwing eggs, bleach and some more forceful object against various Vox leaders who were visiting the neighborhood has been postponed. The party’s defense requests sentences of six years in prison and fines of about 4,500 euros each. The prosecution, for its part, requests penalties of 7,200 euros and compensation of 700 euros for the seven members of the delegation.

In principle, this trial was scheduled to take place next week, in the Ciutat de la Justícia, right in the final stretch of this electoral campaign, but given the penalties requested, it will take place in the Barcelona Court, on a date yet to be determined. . Meanwhile, in the Raval, these days, protest acts continue to be held in solidarity with the defendants.

The events took place on September 2, 2020, in the afternoon, a few days after a Vox member said that the Raval is a multicultural dunghill. The politicians of this far-right formation that came to this side of Ciutat Vella had to take refuge in a hotel on Hospital street. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.

“We have come to denounce the insecurity and illegal immigration –proclaimed one of them inside the hotel in question, in a video that still runs on the networks-, and also how this neighborhood has become in the last ten years a multicultural dunghill because of the left”.

The truth is that the multicultural stercolero was not liked by many on these streets. Around 50 neighborhood associations have already shown their support for the accused. We talked about immigrant organizations, such as the Association of Pakistani Workers, the Association of Moroccan Immigrants AMICAL, the Casal Argentí de Barcelona… and also many of a very alternative character, but also of many workers of CAP Raval Nord, of the main association of merchants in the neighborhood, including the Xarxa Veïnal del Raval, currently the most prominent neighborhood association in this area of Ciutat Vella.

The letter from the Prosecutor’s Office states that that afternoon two Vox deputies and several collaborators were walking through the neighborhood escorted by national police officers. Then a few dozen people rebuked them, shouting “fascist get out of our neighborhoods,” among other things, “while setting off firecrackers, activating smoke canister initiation systems, and throwing eggs, cans, and bleach at them.”

The Prosecutor’s Office also indicates that five people from the Vox entourage “were hit by eggs and other objects, but did not require medical assistance.” And two of them “were splashed with bleach.” The entourage had to take refuge in a hotel. The protesters broke the security cameras, defaced the facade and also kicked it a few times. After 20 minutes, the Vox were able to leave, after the Mossos arrived and protected their departure.

Among the accused are a couple of members of the CUP, the militant of an anti-fascist association, a very popular Senegalese sculptor here who for years has been in the Miramar gardens, on Montjuïc, to sell his figures. He has been trying to regularize his point of sale for years and adds some precedents.

And a woman from Badalona who arrived in the Raval a few years ago, along with her two young children, will also sit on the bench, dragging a very complicated situation. Soon, hand in hand with a handful of neighbors, she occupied a place that the drug traffickers had tried several times to appropriate to set up a drug store. Then Banc Sabadell, its owner, signed with her the social rental of the property.

The Prosecutor’s Office accuses them of crimes of coercion and damages, as well as minor crimes of mistreatment, concurring the aggravating circumstance of discrimination based on ideology. Hence, he also requests the prohibition of approaching any act of this party in Barcelona for three years.

“A hate crime? – the defendants reply – wasn’t it supposed that this aggravating circumstance is intended to protect minorities? And in this story, who hates the minorities of the Raval?
