This spring, and especially after the last rains, the vegetation around the Malafogassa bridge has become more and more splendid, to the point that we appreciate in the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia how it even sprouts from the walls of this medieval infrastructure.
This medieval bridge has crossed the Riera Major as it passes through the municipality of Vilanova de Sau for centuries.
With an architecture typical of the Gothic style of the 15th century, to this day it still preserves the same structure that was erected in its first and only reform in 1498.
Its builder built it on the ruins of a previous bridge that was destroyed by several earthquakes between 1425 and 1427. Its usefulness still persists, being one of the crossing points of the Guilleries paths.
Its structure consists of two unequal semicircular arches made of stone. The widest and highest is intended for the passage of water, while the narrower one serves to save the unevenness of the terrain.
The bridge is considered a Cultural Asset of Local Interest and, when the heat arrives, it is an idyllic place to bathe. It also attracts fishermen.
