Governance in Extremadura and specifically the possibility of a pact between PP and Vox is on its way to becoming one of the most weighty arguments in the pre-campaign and the general election campaign on July 23 and the PSOE is playing this game convinced of that installing this framework is electorally convenient for him.
For this reason, the president of the Assembly of Extremadura, the socialist Blanca Martín, has not yielded to the claims of the PP candidate, María Guardiola, who yesterday asked her for time to reach an agreement with the ultra-right party, and instead has given the acting president of the Board, his co-religionist Guillermo Fernández Vara, the opportunity to submit to an investiture debate to be held on July 5 and 6, arguing that his is the only “formalized” candidacy Until now.
Fernández Vara, who in previous contacts with the President of the Assembly informed her of his willingness to stand for the investiture despite not having sufficient support, will not be elected since, despite leading the most voted list on 28-M , it could only count on the 28 socialist seats and the 4 of Podemos-IU, insufficient to surpass the 28 of the PP and the 5 of Vox.
However, Fernández Vara will be able to influence, thanks to the debate, the contradictions of the PP candidate, María Guardiola, who a week ago abhorred the possibility of governing with Vox and considered the foolishness broken, and yesterday assured that she wanted an agreement with the formation of Abascal, which is why he asked for more time to go to the investiture.
The president of the Assembly, asked why she did not take Guardiola’s request into account, has justified that she has to comply with the law and “the law is what marks the Statute of autonomy and the regulations of the Assembly”. “I don’t have to make more interpretations than apply the law”, she has settled.
Guardiola stressed yesterday that “we are the only bloc, the center-right, which can obtain this support.” “We believe that Mr. Fernández Vara intends to make a farce using the institution and it does not seem logical that he would deceive the people of Extremadura again,” he then deplored.
After that, the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, said today in an interview on TVE that his party “has not lowered” at “at any time” its hand outstretched to the PP in Extremadura “despite the rudeness, certain insults, demonizations ” and “an attempt at permanent blackmail that seeks to make us give away the trust of our voters to another party so that it governs”.
According to the Extremadura Statute, Fernández Vara must present his program before the Plenary Assembly and after the debate, on the 6th, the investiture vote will take place, in which the candidate must obtain an absolute majority to be proclaimed president. . If such a majority is not obtained, a new vote will be held 48 hours after the first one, on Saturday the 8th, in which a simple majority will be required.
The procedure may be repeated, with the same or different candidates, as many times as the President of the Assembly deems appropriate. That is, the president of the Assembly controls the times. In that sense, the key date is July 23. Blanca Martin could convene a new investiture plenary session on the eve of the electoral date, either for Fernández Vara or Guardiola.
However, if within two months from the first vote none of the candidates has been elected, the Assembly will be dissolved and the acting president of the autonomous community will proceed to call new elections. In other words, if there had not been a successful inauguration by September 6, there would be elections automatically at the beginning of November.
