This Thursday, the municipal services of the Valencia City Council began to cut down the controversial Christmas fir tree located in the San Marcelino neighborhood, which cost 11,000 euros. The felling of the tree, already dying, has been denounced by the neighborhood’s neighborhood association and by the PSPV, which has denounced the waste of the initiative.
The fir tree was imported from Italy and placed in the Plaza de Reina during the Christmas holidays. After the celebrations, it was transplanted to the most peripheral neighborhood of San Marcelino where it has been drying out little by little. Last Tuesday, the residents of the area already organized an early Christmas party – dressed in Santa hats and singing Christmas carols – “before the parched fir tree fell on them.”
Sources from the parks and gardens delegation led by Vox spokesperson, Juanma Badenas, have explained that the Valencia City Council has proceeded to replace the Christmas fir tree located in the San Marcelino neighborhood with a lime tree about 6 meters high. Along these lines, they have argued that the tree “was used as part of the Christmas decoration of the city center that serves as an attraction to boost sales in commerce (at a time that is especially difficult for the sector) and hospitality, as well as with the set of thousands of poinsettias and other species that are used expressly for the Christmas campaign.”
Given the criticism from neighbors and opposition, the Badenas Department points out that “traditionally these specimens are removed once the season ends” and that, in the case of the fir, it has lasted a few more months. “No fir tree in the world, nor the one in Rockefeller Center in New York, nor any other, are transplanted after fulfilling their mission as Christmas decorations,” add the same sources.
PSPV councilor Borja Sanjuán does not see it that way, who has stated that with the felling of this specimen “it is confirmed” that the mayor of the city, María José Catalá, has placed in charge of Parks and Gardens “a truly inept person who “He has spent 10,000 euros to buy a tree just out of vanity.” “Today the image of the Green Capital of Catalá is the felling of the VOX Christmas fir tree,” denounced the socialist councilor.
