Juan Antonio Serrano, from Unitat d’Aran (UA), hopes to revalidate the absolute majority in the Vielha City Council with a continuation project. This would be the third absolute majority for Serrano, who obtained nine councilors in the 2019 elections and seven in the 2015 elections.

The historic convergent Pau Perdices, who was already in charge of the mayor’s office in the mandates that began in 1999 and 2007, and the latter as head of the opposition, leaves politics and the Convergència Democràtica Aranesa CDA-PNA presents itself to the municipal elections with a candidacy headed by Enrique Jimenez. Currently, CDA has three representatives in the consistory and Amassa, related to ERC, has Julián Fernández as the only representative and repeats as a candidate.

The residents of the Aranese capital will have to choose these elections between five candidacies. Vox presents Alejandra Roig as a candidate and Tomas Davo for the PP. The elections four years ago in Vielha presented seven candidates, something unusual in the Aranese capital. Ciudadanos and Podemos have not appeared in these elections.

Alejandra Roig, who was a candidate of the Popular Party for the Conselh Generau in 2015 and appeared in the Vielha City Council in the last elections, is now running for Vox.

The party that won the 28-M elections will have to work, among other issues, to solve access to housing, one of the main problems in Aran. In this sense, municipal land for the construction of social housing has recently been made available to the Incasòl (Catalan Soil Institute) as well as to private developers.

In recent years, the City Council has approved measures to help maintain a stable stock of rental homes. In particular, there has been an impact on the regulation of housing for tourist use and shared homes.

Last year, the Aranese singer-songwriter Alidé Sans led a musical project against the Winter Olympic Games in the Pyrenees. However, this has not been the majority position of the Aranese and, in fact, the highest institution, the Conselh Generau d’Aran and the Council of Mayors of Val d’Aran, were in favor and gave their support to the Olympic bid. The Vielha City Council did the same.

In this sense, the mayor Juan Antonio Serrano was always “in favor” of a winter Games candidacy that would energize the Pyrenees and put an end to the deficits it suffers. In addition, he never agreed with holding a consultation related to the Olympic project, arguing that it did not make much “sense” when the technical proposal of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) had already been presented.

In recent years, Vielha has undergone an important change and according to Juan Antonio Serrano, the challenge for the next term will be to adapt the services, the urban planning or the functioning of the administration to the current demands.

Promoting the economic and tourist development of the municipality is one of the aspects that this legislature has done, but it should continue to be done in the future. Another challenge as a municipality is to define the future of the military parking lot, aware of the importance of this entire area to revitalize Vielha’s economy.
