Unemployment grew in the Valencian Community in January by 6,776 people (2%), which is the third largest monthly increase in all of Spain in absolute terms, only surpassed by Andalusia and Madrid, while compared to the same month in 2022 it fell by 14,277 people (-3.97%).
According to data published this Thursday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy, unemployment increased in Spain in the first month of 2023 by 70,744 more people (2.49%), up to 345,019, although if compared to January 2022 it fell in 214,462 people (-6.87%).
In January, the month in which unemployment usually increases, unemployment only fell in the Balearic Islands (297 fewer people), while it rose in the rest of the autonomous communities, mainly in Andalusia (21,048 more people), Comunidad de Madrid (11,140) and Valencian Community (6,776).
Regarding the provinces of the Valencian Community, unemployment rose in January in all three. In absolute terms, it did more in Valencia, with 3,536 people (an increase of 2.18%), followed by Alicante, with 1,923 more (up 1.37%), and Castellón, with 1,317 more unemployed (grew by 3 .73%).
If compared to January 2022, in the province of Valencia there are 6,421 fewer unemployed people (-3.72%) and in Alicante there are 8,761 fewer (a decrease of 5.80%), while Castellón has 905 people more stops (an increase of 2.54%).
Thus, the total number of unemployed people at the beginning of 2023 stands at 166,008 in the province of Valencia, at 142,418 in Alicante and at 36,593 in Castellón.
By sex, of the 345,019 unemployed people in the Valencian Community, a total of 209,642 are women and 135,377 men, while 21,436 are under 25 years of age (11,112 men and 10,324 women).
The total number of foreigners unemployed in the Region amounts to 59,634, of which 22,546 are from the Community and 37,088 from outside the Community. In January unemployment in this group has risen by 1,911 people (3.31%) and throughout the year by 1,417 (2.43%).
By sectors of activity, unemployment has fallen in two: industry (-178 people) and construction (-168), while it has risen in the rest, especially in services (6,807 more unemployed), followed by the group without previous employment (222) and agriculture (88).
In this way, the number of unemployed people in services rises to 244,506, in industry there are 42,022, in construction 25,901, in the group without previous employment 22,251 and in agriculture 10,339.
Regarding contracts, in January a total of 100,930 were formalized, 3.80% less (-3,986) than the previous month, which represents 51,960 fewer contracts than in the same month of 2022, a decrease of 33.99%.
Permanent contracts amounted to 50,289 in January, 6.38% more (3,016) than in December, while there are 27,165 more (117.48%) than the same month of 2022. In the case of temporary contracts, 50,641 contracts were made, 12.15% less (-7,002) in the monthly rate and 60.98% less (-79,125) compared to the year-on-year.
