U.K. Police accuse Harvey Weinstein of 'indecent attack' on a woman

Harvey Weinstein, a disgraced movie mogul, has been charged with assaulting a woman in Britain, according to an independent investigator in the U.K. on Wednesday.

Rosemary Ainslie (head of the Crown Prosecution Service) stated that Weinstein was charged with two counts for indecent assault in relation to an incident that occurred in London in 1996.

Weinstein, 70 years old, was charged with new charges after Ainslie stated that the Metropolitan Police had reviewed the evidence collected during its investigation.

Police said that the woman, now in her 50s was attacked by the producer sometime between July 31-August 31 1996.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings against the defendant remain active and that he is entitled to a fair trial.”

The CPS is an independent agency which “prosecutes crimes that have been investigated and confirmed by police or other investigation agencies in England and Wales.”

Weinstein is currently being held in Los Angeles at The Correctional Treatment Center. This is the medical unit of the Twin Towers jail. He is awaiting trial on 11 counts of rape, and sexual assault.

A New York jury convicted Weinstein of third-degree sexual assault on Jessica Mann, an aspiring actress, and a charge of criminal sexual act first degree against Mimi Haley (a former production assistant for Project Runway).

The jury found him not guilty of two counts of predatory sex assault. Each of these charges could have resulted in a life sentence. Mann was also exonerated of a charge of first-degree sexual assault.

Weinstein was sentenced in New York to 23 years imprisonment. Weinstein appealed against the conviction. However, a New York appeals court upheld it last Wednesday.
