The two immigrants whose bodies were found this Friday on a beach in Adra (Almería) died trying to swim to the coast, according to what the Government sub-delegate in Almería, José María Martín, has specified.

In statements to the media at the Almería Command, Martín stated that this Friday two boats with a total of 132 people have reached the Abderitan coast, of which he has indicated that “all have been rescued without further notice, except for the two victims ” fatalities and another person who is injured and has been hospitalized. “They have died from drowning, since they have had to try to swim to the coast,” said the subdelegate.

Sources of the investigation have indicated to EFE that the pateristas would have forced the immigrants to jump into the water. For the moment, Martín has specified, there have been no arrests since the alleged bosses have not been located.

The Government sub-delegate has lamented this “new tragedy” and has condemned the activity of “the mafias and the people who are engaging in this criminal activity”, since the dead are “victims of human trafficking”. As reported to EFE by sources of the investigation, the boats arrived in Adra around seven in the morning after allegedly setting sail from the Moroccan coast.

According to the sources consulted, during the last three days there has been a small “wave” of boats in the municipality of Abderita, which has caused the Almería Command to request reinforcements from the Granada Command.

The latter has also been pointed out to EFE by the spokesman for the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) in Almería, Víctor Vega, who has assured that the guards in the province are “overwhelmed” and the assistance that can be provided by sea is “limited”. He has stressed that Almería continues without having an Immigrant Detention Center (CIE) or “a police model in conditions” despite being the “point of the peninsula that supports the most immigration.”

“The Temporary Reception Center for Foreigners (CATE) is not capable of absorbing 125 people. In recent years not only has nothing been done, but the situation is getting worse,” Vega stressed.
