Two deputies injured, Defendant dead after shooting out Utah sheriff's office

The Salt Lake County Metro Jail is about lockdown after the shooting.

Two deputies are hurt and a defendant is dead after a shooting outside a sheriff’s office at South Salt Lake, Utah, police said.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. local time Saturday, on the north side of their house’s parking lot close to a bus stop, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said during a media briefing.

2 deputies patrolling the campus were taken and are hospitalized, she said.

The sheriff stated at this time it’s uncertain what precisely led up into the episode and the deputies approached the defendant.

“Something happened to acquire their focus to talk with him, then it occurred quite quickly in which there was an experience and shots had been fired,” Rivera explained. “He’d shoot our deputies, and also our deputies shot back”

It’s uncertain now the number of shots have been fired or when one or both of those wounded deputies fired their weapons,” she explained.

The deputies don’t put on body cameras, the sheriff said, however there’s surveillance footage available that’ll be published at the close of the investigation.

“These episodes are catastrophic for the section, and we hope and expect the deputies will probably be OK,” she explained.

The identities of these deputies haven’t been released pending notification of family. Researchers are still trying to ascertain the identity of this defendant, Rivera said.

The sheriff’s office is situated near the Salt Lake County Metro Jail, which was on lockdown after the shooting.

“It will be about lockdown until we feel it is protected,” Rivera said before Saturday. “The prison isn’t in danger but this is our protocol”
