One person has died and six people have been injured in an accident tonight in Empuriabrava, in Castelló d’Empúries, where a car has run over four people and then fell into the canal after midnight. Said car ran into another vehicle that was parked, empty, and which also fell into the water.
The events took place on the Paseo Marítimo at the height of Avenida Europa. Four people were traveling in the vehicle that caused the accident, one of whom died. Two others have been injured and the fourth has left the place by her own foot. The car was traveling at high speed and would have rolled over before hitting the water.
The vehicle ran over four people who suffered injuries of varying degrees while they were having dinner sitting on a bench. The accident was reported at 00:19. A total of 10 crews from the Roses, Llançà and Figueres park firefighters and crews from the underwater GRAE have gone to the scene after receiving numerous calls to 112 alerting them to the accident.
At 12:32 a.m., two firefighters from the Roses park were already in the water providing air to the victims with specialized equipment. Three men have been helped from the car. The Emergency Medical System (SEM) has carried out resuscitation maneuvers on one of them without success. The other two have injuries of varying degrees but there is no fear for their lives. According to the witnesses, the hypothesis is that the fourth occupant of the vehicle has left the scene of the accident by his own means.
The Firefighters, in coordination with those responsible for the Local Police of Castelló d’Empúries, the SEM and the Mossos, have searched for the second sunken vehicle and have verified that it was empty. On both banks of the canal, emergency teams and also citizens have pulled several people out of the water, including some of those run over.
Once all the people involved have been attended, members of the underwater GRAE, who have arrived very quickly at the accident because they were in Calella de Palafrugell due to the security device of the Havana concert, have carried out a last inspection of the sunken vehicles and the surroundings to rule out the presence of the fourth passenger, signaling the area to facilitate the investigation of the Empúries Local Police, which is instructing the accident report.
The SEM, in addition to 7 ambulances, activated psychological support to care for both the victims and the spectators of the accident.
