Tribute to the charcoal burner in 'Temps de Flors'

I share in La Vanguardia Readers’ Photos this series of images in which I show this work exhibited at Temps de Flors in Girona, a festival in which I have participated since 2013.

On this occasion, it was in the Carbonera, located in the Museum of History of Girona, in the old cistern of the Capuchin convent. Later, it was a refuge during the war and in the 60s it was a business where coal was sold, hence its name.

The floral work that I present in this edition of Temps de Flors, which ends this Sunday, is a tribute to the profession of charcoal burner, which is almost non-existent today.

During the Civil War, La Carbonera was set up as an air-raid shelter for the center’s teaching staff and students, along with the residents of the area. Its peculiar construction characteristics – Catalan vault and very thick walls and partly excavated in the same rock – and location – facilitated this use. It currently hosts temporary exhibitions and activities.

Girona, Temps de Flors will end its 69th edition today. Since last May 11, 137 floral projects have been deployed in 109 spaces. The exhibition has moved up its opening and closing times, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., to adapt to visiting habits observed in recent years.
