Remco Evenpoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl) is more of a leader than ever. In the final stage, he celebrated a “perfect day” at the Vuelta a España and retained the leader’s red jersey by winning a late sprint to the top of Alto de Piornal on Thursday.
The 192km mountain stage from Trujillo culminated with two climbs to the top-class Alto de Piornal, and it was here that the 22-year-old secured victory.
He overtook his closest rival in the general classification, Spaniard Enric Mas, after the duo caught up with stage leader Robert Gesink (Jumbo-Visma) with just under half a kilometer to go, widening his advantage in the general classification of two minutes and seven seconds over the Spanish.
Stage 19 of the Vuelta a España 2022, which will take place entirely in Talavera de la Reina, will cover 138.3 kilometers and will start at 12:30 p.m., with a scheduled finish for 5:41 p.m.
