-The workers of the Torredembarra Post Office, in Tarragonès (Tarragona) have protested the lack of staff and the job insecurity they suffer.
CCOO, UGT and CSIF regret that for five years neither sick leave nor work permits have been covered. This causes, they say, work overloads and delays in the delivery of letters with longer routes that harm the quality of the service.
The unions assured that they work with 35% less staff. “Apart from being a physical effort, it is also psychological because we have a lot of pressure to deliver everything,” said the secretary of postal services at the UGT Post Office in Tarragona, Joan Beltran. The employees warn that they will call for new actions. Twenty workers participated in a protest this Monday in front of the Post Office to denounce the cuts suffered in the service offered from Torredembarra.
Before raising the blinds, the employees went to the headquarters where citizens are served, where they repeated the action.
As explained by the trade unionists, Torredembarra has eight sections that concentrate the rural services of nine towns – El Catllar, Creixell, La Nou de Gaià, La Pobla de Montornés, la Riera, Salomó and Vespella-, as well as the distribution service of Altahoja , with two sections.
In the afternoon shift, there is one full day and five partial shifts – four hours long – that serve Torredembarra, Altafulla and the nine municipalities, including all the respective urbanizations.
“The lack of personnel is throughout Spain, but the situation in Baix Gaià is a very worrying case, the service is very bad, people attack the postman and he is the one who has the least blame, because he suffers it in his own flesh,” lamented the delegate in the postal sector of CCOO of Tarragona, Jesús Velasco.
“Luckily the people at the Post Office are very professional, but the situation is unsustainable, they must be hired and the company must change the chip,” added the union representative.
In fact, union members have denounced that in certain periods, such as summer, only half of the staff works. “We want there to be coverage for delivery personnel, both in urban and rural postmen, today, of the ten workers that we are, there are only five, that implies that the rest of us must do everyone’s work,” he said. insured the secretary of postal services of the UGT Post Office in Tarragona, Joan Beltran.
The unions point out that the lack of personnel causes a loss in the quality of the postal service, since the staff does not reach the entire delivery.
“There is a lot of pressure, you have to go out to distribute quickly and nothing should be left, this has an impact on the worker’s health,” Beltran stated. For all these reasons, the three unions ask that measures be adopted to guarantee the provision of the postal service.
Specifically, they demand the coverage of structural positions in the Torredembarra Delivery Unit and rural skies. Likewise, they demand to maintain the quality of working conditions. If they cannot reverse this situation, they warn that they will call new protests.
