The American Tiger Woods retired from the PGA Championship this Saturday after finishing the third day of competition with 79 strokes, nine over par, which was the worst performance of his career in this major.

Woods, a four-time PGA Championship champion, had admitted at the end of his round that he was unsure about competing on Sunday and confirmed his retirement hours later, the PGA Tour reported in a note.

The American golfer, who was playing his second tournament of the season after the Augusta Masters, was visibly affected by pain in his leg, which was broken last year in a serious road accident.

He could not move freely and the low temperatures at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa (Oklahoma, USA) exacerbated his pain. “I’m in pain, that’s a fact,” Woods said at the end of his round.

“I didn’t play well, I didn’t hit the ball well and I didn’t start like I needed to. (…) I couldn’t stop bogeying, I didn’t do anything right. I didn’t have many good shots and, by the way, I ended up with high numbers”, he added.
