They find the body of a missing girl in the Ischia landslide

The body of a girl was found today in one of the houses destroyed by the landslide on the Italian island of Ischia (south), the second confirmed fatality, while a dozen missing persons continue to be searched in the mud.

The body was located in a room flooded by mud and corresponds to a girl of “5 or 6 years of age” yet to be identified, according to sources from the Naples prefecture, which coordinates the work.

This is the second localized fatality, since yesterday the lifeless body of a 31-year-old woman who lived at the disaster site with her boyfriend, whose whereabouts are still unknown, was found.

The island of Ischia, facing the Gulf of Naples, recorded torrential rains last night that caused flooding and a serious landslide that violently dragged everything in its path in the area of ??the municipality of Casamicciola Terme, on its northern slope.

A part of Mount Epomeo gave way and reached several houses in the town, which are being searched with great effort and difficulties by emergency teams, reinforced with units arriving from Naples, from other points and the Armed Forces.

The missing, wanted people who have not given signs of life, are “between 10 and 12”, explained the government delegate in Naples, Claudio Palomba.

Among these are the components of a family that lived in the area most affected by the landslide, Via Celario, at the foot of the mountain, according to local media reports.

Buried areas are being searched by dogs for signs of life under the rubble, while a Coast Guard boat searches the shoreline, where numerous cars and even buses were swept away.
