The results of the regional and local elections of 28-M in the Valencian Community have returned the Valencian left of the PSPV, Compromís and Unides Podem, which have formed the Botànic pact for eight years, to the couch; and to start a process of reflection, a journey through the desert, with unforeseeable consequences, which can be accelerated with the calling of general elections for July. It already happened in 1995, when the PSPV lost the Generalitat Valenciana against the PP and the Valencian Union, beginning a long period of defeats until 2015, twenty years later, and with a long succession of internal struggles that caused a trail of political corpses.

Ximo Puig spoke this morning on Cadena SER about starting a serene process of reflection. The Valencian socialists have improved the results compared to 2019, but the loss of regional power, and in many capitals, can generate the reopening of new fractures until the leadership that should lead the PSPV to recovery is clarified. It will be necessary to be attentive to the prominence that some mayors like Carlos Fernández Bielsa, mayor of Mislata, can acquire. It cannot be ruled out that Ximo Puig decides, at a certain moment, to make a decision, such as moving away from Les Corts, to shape new profiles of Valencian socialism.

It will be necessary to see how the surprise call of the generals affects the renewal schedule of the PSPV, since it is not convenient to open the box of thunder in the middle of a campaign that is already beginning. The Socialists plan to hold an executive meeting this Tuesday.

They also have scheduled a meeting at Compromís that same day. The result will force us to reflect on the effects of the absence of Mónica Oltra and on the difficulty that the coalition has had to maintain its story in an electoral battle where the national framework has been imposed.

It is likely that a deep reflection will also be opened on the relationship of internal forces in the coalition of Més Compromís, Iniciativa PV and els Verds. The loss of the mayoralty of Valencia has been a hard blow for the formation that will have to start looking for a replacement for Joan Ribó since the still mayor already showed little interest in running again and after losing the mayoralty it seems difficult for him to continue. Papi Robles is number two and leader of Més Compromís in the city, but she has no municipal experience, although she has not been bad at her stage as spokesperson in the autonomous Parliament.

The same is not the case in Les Corts, where the arrival of Joan Baldoví could serve to rebuild the new stage in the coalition. Everything indicates that the one from Sueca, an experienced parliamentarian and specialized in making opposition, will be the new síndic of the parliamentary group.

It will be necessary to see in the face of the general elections if Compromís has the same vocation of joining Yolanda Díaz’s Sumar project after the failure of Unides Podem. This Monday there were those who expressed their doubts about whether it was worth embracing a “little hope” project or trying to keep the Compromís deputy for Madrid. However, from Iniciativa they had no doubt that Yolanda Díaz was the only hope. With the hasty call, there is not much time for internal debate since in a matter of weeks the coalitions will have to be presented.

It remains to finally know what Unides Podem will do. The coalition of Esquerra Unida and Podem has been left out of the institutions, with a very bad result in the Valencian Parliament. No one doubts that the internal tensions in this political space since the presentation of Yolanda Díaz’s Sumar project have played against a political project that has been key and decisive in the Botànic for two legislatures. The results will also force us to rethink certain leaderships that have not been able to achieve the minimum objectives pursued.
