The mayoress of Ripoll and leader of the ultra-nationalist party Aliança Catalana, Sílvia Orriols, will run in the regional elections on May 12, as announced this afternoon on the social network X.
Orriols herself will lead this candidacy. In fact, throughout this week the mayor of Ripoll had already suggested the possibility of running to compete in the independence space with a speech marked by the rejection of immigration. Orriols was a member of the National Front of Catalonia, a party with which she shares a good part of its undisguisedly xenophobic discourse and from which she ended up separating to form her own brand, Aliança Catalana.
Regarding the effect that this candidacy may have, everything is conjecture, although it is evident that it will force the other forces and, in particular, Junts per Catalunya, with whom it competes, to address the issue of immigration.
In any case, no survey published so far assures Orriols a representation in the future Parliament but it is true that the formal presentation of the candidacy can change this perspective.
