A delegation of the Catalan Federation of Catifaires (Carpet Makers) led this Tuesday at the Unesco headquarters in Paris the presentation of the nomination of the floral carpets for Intangible Cultural Heritage, together with representatives from Italy, Belgium, Malta and other places from Spain
During their visit, they met with the ambassador of Spain to Unesco, Miquel Iceta, and thanked the Ministry of Culture for the work to draft this candidacy, promoted by the International Coordinator of Carpet Entities, which is chaired by the Catalan Federation of Carpets
“There have been four years of work and reflections on the values ??of the art of making flower carpets, as an intangible cultural heritage,” the Catalan organization indicated in a statement.
“For the carpet makers of the Federation, who travel around the world showing the quality of their works, reaching UNESCO means recognition of their perseverance to improve every day, being part of a great family of carpets from thirteen countries, from three continents. “adds the statement.
The project of this application dates back to 2016, a path that the carpet makers knew “would not be easy”, but which they undertook “with the conviction that the art of making flower carpets is worthy of the highest international recognition.”
Carpets are works of ephemeral art that are traditionally made with flower petals, whole flowers and herbs, and represent very diverse motifs, although the most frequent are usually linked to the celebration of Corpus Christi, geometric motifs or local themes.
They serve to decorate, as well as to perfume the atmosphere, especially when the processions pass.
