The sun magnifies the Mar Menuda

On the Mar Menuda beach in the bay of Tossa de Mar, on the left side, there is a small cove, called Sa Banyera de Ses Dones, between a rock formation.

Just during the month of December you can observe the sunrise within the same cove, as seen in this photograph in La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos.

In the snapshot we see how the sun grows larger and larger, giving rise to the creation of a solar pillar, whose trail ends up penetrating this cove.

A pillar light is an atmospheric optical phenomenon in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and/or below a light source.

The effect is created by the reflection of light from small ice crystals that are suspended in the atmosphere or that comprise high-altitude clouds (for example, cirrostratus or cirrus clouds).

If the light comes from the sun (generally when it is near or even below the horizon), the phenomenon is called a solar pillar, as in this case in Tossa.
