Lancet fish (Alepisaurus ferox), also called cannibals, do not cease to amaze scientists. At nearly two meters long, this ‘scaleless lizard’ is one of the largest deep-sea fish, with a fierce appearance with fanged gaping jaws, huge eyes, a long, slippery body and a sail-shaped fin.
This species lives primarily in tropical and subtropical waters, but migrates north to subarctic areas such as the Bering Sea in Alaska to feed. That’s why scientists have been baffled by the discovery of several lancet fish off the shores of Oregon beaches in the North Pacific.
