The Rialb meander resists drought better

I have captured these images of the Rialb reservoir meander for La Vanguardia’s Readers’ Photos, which have nothing to do with the very dry Ter meander in the Sau reservoir. One is at 30% capacity while the other is at just 2%, according to the latest data.

Faced with the needs of the Urgell Canal, in 1999 the Rialb reservoir was inaugurated, which left the towns of Peramola and Oliana between two swamps. It belongs to the rivers Segre, Rialb and Ribera Salada.

The dam extends through the northwest of the Noguera region in the municipalities of Ponts, La Baronia de Rialb and Tiurana, and to a lesser extent through Basella, Peramola and Oliana in the extreme north of Alt Urgell.

Although Catalonia suffers from a persistent drought, it seems that Rialb is resisting better. There have been other times when it has been worse, even in a rather critical situation, such as in December 2022, when it was at 8% of its capacity.

We can contemplate the Rialb reservoir pissing with water, which is good news, since it is one of the largest reservoirs in Catalonia. But, on the other hand, the color of the trees that surround the reservoir is not so important, as they have lost their green due to water stress.
