The sunrise at the monastery of Santa Maria de Serrateix seems perpetual, immortal, like the beauty of this small complex that, despite not being very large, was able to remain independent for nine centuries.
In this series of images in La Vanguardia Readers’ Photos we can contemplate the autumn dawn with the clouds covering the old monastery and the incipient glow in the sky at the moment of autumn dawn.
In this way, it was a Benedictine monastery for 900 years (941-1835). Today it has been converted into a parish in the municipality of Viver i Serrateix, in Berguedà.
It is declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest and brings together a multitude of architectural styles. The complex is made up of the Romanesque temple, with the Gothic bell tower, the neoclassical cloister and the monastery rooms, with the Gothic abbey palace renovated in the Baroque period.
It is located in the village of Serrateix, at km 13 of the BV-4235 road, from Navàs. Anciently, in the place where the monastery was built, the so-called Torre del Abad was located, most likely from the 9th century, from the time of the repopulation carried out by Count Guifré el Pelós.
In the year 941 there was already a small monastic community, headed by Abbot Froilán. The first church is from the first half of the 10th century and is pre-Romanesque in style, of which there are still vestiges.
