The president of Congress, Meritxell Batet, asked the Vox parliamentarians to defend their “political positions” in the rostrum, but without “offending or hurting” the rest of the deputies and, therefore, the citizens they represent.
Shortly after ten in the morning, Batet intervened in the plenary session of Congress after the intervention of the deputy of Vox Patricia de las Heras, on the bill of the railway sector.
The parliamentarian for the Balearic Islands affirmed that, with this rule, once again the “Government yields to communists, separatists, coup plotters, embezzlers and those who defend those convicted of terrorism, that is, philo-terrorists, but also defend pedophiles and rapists”.
When it was finished, and before giving way to the PP deputy Andrés Lorite, Batet intervened to share with their lordships the “reflection” that “going up to this rostrum should be something sacred” because of what it means to go up to this rostrum on behalf of the Spanish people”.
But, he pointed out, “as long as there are deputies who go up to this rostrum with the sole intention of offending deputies of this Chamber, parliamentary groups and, therefore, offending the citizens we represent, we will not be able to reach at a level that this Chamber deserves, at a level of parliamentarism worthy of what Spanish democracy is”.
For this reason, he asked “again”, addressing Vox especially, that “every time they go up to this rostrum they do not go up to hurt, but to defend their political positions without offending and without hurting” others because they know perfectly “that there are certain expressions, use of language, that the only thing he is looking for is that (to hurt) ”
“I assure you that to defend your positions there are much more effective and dignified ways for Spanish democracy than many of the ones we hear here,” said a blunt Batet looking at the bench of the formation headed by Santiago Abascal, present in the Chamber.
Thus, Batet “publicly” once again asked the parliamentarians, after the reflection that they already held at the last meeting of the Board of Spokesmen, for the “commitment of each and every one of you to collaborate, dignify and be up to what we stand for, for our society and the citizens we represent, for what is expected of us.”
However, he warned that “if this is not done, they know that an article of the Regulations is violated” because “they are making interventions that are outside of article 16 of the regulations” of the Congress of Deputies, the president warned.
Specifically, said article says that “the deputies are obliged to adapt their conduct to the Regulations and to respect parliamentary order, courtesy and discipline, as well as not to disclose the actions that, according to the provisions of the Regulations, may exceptionally have the character of secrets”.
After her reprimand, Batet denied the floor to the Vox spokesman, Ivan Espinosa de los Monteros, who was suing her from his seat, arguing that he was “not” going to “enter into a debate with the Presidency.”
