Prades, in the Baix Camp region, has a spring that quenches much more than thirst. And it is that this town, known as the Vila Vermella (red town) for the reddish sandstone of its buildings, offers continuous displays of public art along its streets and squares. On the doors, on the walls… any support is useful, as can be seen in the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia.
In Plaça Major we find an ancient Renaissance-style fountain, from the 15th – 16th centuries, made of stone and cement, with four spouts.
Its spherical shape and its spouts oriented to the four cardinal points resemble the globe, which is why they call it the symbol of the Earth.
In 1979, a tradition began for the night of July 14, when, from 12 noon to 6 in the morning, instead of flowing water from the pipes, cava came out to the delight of all those attending the party.
This Cava Festival, for which some 4,000 bottles of sparkling wine were required, was no longer celebrated in this way. Among other things, volunteers were needed to introduce the cava through the pipes located on the roof of the Town Hall from where it reached the spouts of the fountain. Now, it has become a wine, cava and beer tasting event, with tasting of gastronomic proposals, in mid-July.
Apart from the porticoed Plaça Major, in Prades there are other places of interest, such as the church of Santa Maria, the remains of the old walls, the castle or, on the outskirts, the hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of the Bee .
