“It is a symbol of harmony.” This is how Inma Mora, spokesperson for the new municipal government of Elx, defined the cross of the fallen that occupies the central space of the Paseo de Germanías this morning. The reform project approved by the previous team, governed by the socialist Carlos González, had included the withdrawal of the symbol, but the two parties that make up the PP-VOX coalition had already announced in the campaign what they have ratified today: the reform will take out, but the cross will remain in its current place.

The Local Government Board has approved today the award of the rehabilitation and modernization works of the Paseo de Germanías for just over 1.1 million euros. The execution period will be eight months. The new project is subsidized with Edusi funds and as explained by the spokesperson, Inma Mora, “it will be adapted to the conservation of the cross, as we promised at the time and as the mayor Pablo Ruz already announced.”

Mora has assured that “the cross, which has been respected by all the socialist mayors of the democracy, except by the last government team, is a symbol of concord, and that is the line of this municipal government. Harmony, normality and the government of all”.

When announcing the project that is now being modified, the government of the socialist Carlos González defended the removal of the cross within the rehabilitation and transformation action of this area of ??the city center, as it is a “symbol” of the Franco dictatorship that “So much damage and pain has caused.”

The Local Government Board has also approved the extension of the execution period for the rehabilitation works of the Hort de Pontos until October 1, at the request of the company, due to delays due to lack of material. In addition, it has been reported that the contract for the drafting of the execution project for the repair works of the road and the potholes in the roundabout of the Bimil·lenari bridge has been declared null and void.

On the other hand, the extension of hotel hours for public shows, recreational activities and public establishments has been approved from June 30 to September 30. Specifically, cafes, pubs and karaoke bars will extend one more hour, until 04:30, as will banquet halls, while restaurants, internet cafes, bars and cafeterias will open until 02:30.

Out of the agenda, the spokesperson for the Local Government Board has announced that the mayor Pablo Ruz and the mayor of Education, María Bonmatí, met on Wednesday with the parents of the children from the Children’s Health Foundation on the matter of eviction of the center before the possible risk of collapse. According to Mora, the 125 children from the summer school will resume classes next Monday at the La Asunción school, while the 121 from the early care service will be located in the Foundation’s own facilities in the municipality.
