I have captured this photograph of the tower of the castle of Sant Quintí de Mediona, in Alt Penedès, for the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia, when I was walking the path that leads to this place located at the top of a hill near the town center and next to the cemetery.
The old castle of Sant Quintí, which belonged to the barony of Mediona, has been documented since the year 977, while it was created from the 10th and 11th centuries after fighting between Saracens and Christians.
It is a square-shaped enclosure, with a square-section tower at one end and several attached rear buildings. You can still see the buttresses.
In 1714, during the War of the Spanish Succession, a revolt occurred, so a contingent of 2,500 soldiers broke into Sant Quintí to slaughter, looted and burned the town and executed nearly 800 people.
For this reason, every year, in the second week of November, the Mata-Degolla festival is commemorated in which the historical events that took place in the town that fateful year 1714 are recreated.
