In Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia we invite you to discover the fabulous bifurcated poplar that grows next to the Llobregat river near the Pont de Vilomara, in the Bages region.
Inosculation (or anastomosis) is a natural phenomenon in which the trunks, branches, or roots of two trees grow together. It is biologically similar to grafting. These trees are known in forestry as twins.
In this case, the poplar or poplar (pollancre, in Catalan) is a fast-growing tree and can reach large sizes (from 10 to 30 meters, depending on the species).
Two trees can grow to their mature size side by side, showing or not showing inoculation phenomena. They may be of the same species or even of different genera or families.
These trees that grow together are often colloquially called “husband and wife” trees or “marriage trees.” And what nature unites, in this case, it is difficult to separate.
With the latest rainfall, the river Llobregat comes down, stirred up with earth sediments at the height of the well-preserved Pont de Vilomara, as can be seen in the images where the brown waters appear behind the twin poplars.
