The new moon says goodbye to the month of May with its characteristic shape, as we can see in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia in these images captured in Manlleu, in the region of Osona.

At an astronomical level, we must differentiate the new moon (astronomical new moon or black moon, which corresponds to the real new moon) and the crescent moon, which corresponds to the traditional new moon.

Regarding the first, it is usually impossible to see this phase of the moon with the naked eye, since it is hidden behind the sun’s glare. It is only possible to observe it when a total eclipse of the sun occurs.

The “new moon” or “interlunar” is a lunar phase that occurs when the moon is located exactly between the Earth and the Sun, with which its illuminated hemisphere cannot be seen from our planet.

The traditional crescent moon or new moon is the first appearance of the moon in the sky, two days after the new moon has occurred.
