The BMW brand is above all known for the premium cars it manufactures. But not only that, since some time ago it also made its debut in the bicycle sector. For this, it has the collaboration of the prestigious 3T team, an Italian company with extensive experience in cycling that, since 1960, has been developing bicycles that are authentic jewels. Before the Bavarian brand, brands like Lamborghini have also relied on their good work on two wheels.
BMW and 3T have been working together for several years and have just introduced six new joint-label bikes, covering three different types of terrain: asphalt, mountain and city. This range of bikes has a name as suggestive as BMW Exploro.
For each of the three categories (Road, Gravel and Urban), we find both a mechanical and an electric option. Regarding their aesthetics, the bikes of the three types seem practically the same, since they only differ from each other by the secondary components used for the specific use of each of them.
The new machines are based on 3T’s signature Exploro platform, which consists of a handcrafted carbon fiber frame built using resin integration technology and high-quality carbon layups. All six builds include a SRAM Rival AXS groupset, providing 12-speeds and electronic and wireless shifting technology, as well as a 160mm disc brake system.
As for the differences, the Gravel version mounts wheels with aluminum rims with a diameter of 27.5 inches with Pirelli tires. Since it’s built to ride over bumps and rough terrain, special emphasis has been placed on the seat post and handlebars, which are also carbon fiber to help reduce vibrations.
The Urban model is similar to the Gravel in the sense that it also has aluminum wheels, but instead the handlebar is flat to facilitate maneuvering in the city and have greater control over the bike. A detail that does not go unnoticed to make it clear that it is an urban bicycle is the Brooks Cambium saddle.
The Road version, on the other hand, has been made lighter in order to reach top speed. The rims are carbon fiber and are complemented by a pair of Panaracer GravelKing Slick tubeless tires. Its aerodynamic seat post not only reduces vibrations, but also aims for a more efficient ride. The handlebar is also carbon fiber.
As for the three new electric versions, they have a Mahle X20 rear hub motor that provides 40 Nm of maximum torque to assist the cyclist whenever necessary. The Urban and Gravel versions include a 350 Wh battery, while the Road has a 250 Wh battery to lighten its overall weight.
The mechanical models of the Exploro 3T Gravel and Urban range have a price that starts at 5,000 euros, depending on the size and finishes, while the Road has an initial cost of 6,000 euros. Electric bikes have an additional cost of 2,000 euros. They can be purchased at BMW dealers or through the website of the 3T bike firm.
