A police intervention has ended with the arrest of five members of a criminal group dedicated to the production and marketing of marijuana in a home in the Maçanet de la Selva industrial estate.

The investigation began when residents of the area detected a large movement of vehicles and people. In addition, electrical overload problems alerted the neighborhood, which suffered regular power outages.

The organization’s modus operandi consisted of growing marijuana inside the home, where various fertilizers were used to accelerate growth and increase the THC of the plants. The maintenance was carried out with the use of low-consumption LED lamps, with the aim of not overloading the electrical network. Likewise, to avoid being detected, they used carbon filters and extractors.

The initial investigation revealed a strong security system, which initially made police intervention difficult. Once the judicial authority approved the search, the police device of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade of Gerona and two subgroups of the Police Intervention Unit accessed the home. Due to the large dimensions of the place, the collaboration of Special Systems of Barcelona was provided, a unit that provided surveillance drones.

During the search of the home, four members of the organization were arrested, who were trying to get rid of the substances by flushing them down the toilet. One of the criminals fled and was intercepted by the Local Police in the vicinity of the home.

In the police operation, 29,425 kilograms of marijuana, 5,185 kilograms of peeling and 1,724 marijuana plants were seized. Likewise, two long firearms, a detonating pistol with numerous ammunition and falsified documentation were also seized.

The constant power outages in residential areas were solved by an electrical company that restored normal service in the area. The amount defrauded in electrical energy amounts to more than 30,000 euros.

The detainees have been brought to justice and prison without bail has been ordered for three of the detainees and provisional release with precautionary measures pending trial for one of them.
