The general secretary of Podemos, Ione Belarra, and her partner and also minister Irene Montero, wore the ‘kufiya’, the traditional Palestinian scarf, this Thursday on the second day of the investiture session of Pedro Sánchez, which will probably be the last plenary session of the latter in Congress.
To finish off the day with a message, the acting Minister of Equality wore a t-shirt with the face of Rosa Parks, an African-American activist for the civil and political rights of the black American population. Furthermore, Irene Montero wanted to vindicate the ‘only yes means yes’ law, approved in October last year, wearing the slogan printed on a bag.
Both Belarra and Montero, who already wore the Palestinian scarf yesterday, wanted in this way to show their solidarity with the Palestinian people in the face of Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip, after yesterday they did not wear the pin of a watermelon slice, symbol of the Palestinian flag, which Izquierda Unida distributed among the Sumar deputies.
The watermelon slice, which shares colors with the Palestinian flag, served as a substitute for it when, after the Six-Day War, the national flag was banned. Deputies from Movimiento Sumar, IU, los Comunes, Compromís, Chunta Aragonesista and Més por Mallorca put on the pin, but not those from Podemos, predictably due to internal differences in the group.
