The Luceros TRAM station in Alicante, the departure and arrival point of all the lines of the network, will remain closed to the public for a month, from today, Monday, January 22, to February 21, as a result of the installation works. of the new railway escape that will be carried out in the station tunnel.
The work is budgeted at 1.6 million euros, VAT included, and will improve the maneuvering and circulation capacity of the trains and trams that circulate on the underground route, according to the company Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana.
As a result of the work, during these weeks, Lines 1 (Luceros-Benidorm), 2 (Luceros-Sant Vicent del Raspeig), 3 (Luceros-El Campello) and 4 (Luceros-Plaza La Coruña) will have their origin and destination at the Mercado station.
The temporary closure of Luceros implies some small alterations with respect to the usual schedules, which users can consult at the Alicante TRAM stations and stops, as well as on the official website and app.
However, during the closure of Luceros, the Customer Point located at this station will continue to operate during its usual hours, although at the Mercado station it is planned to reinforce the customer service staff to facilitate the access and exit of travelers.
What is the reason for the work? Currently, the Luceros station has only two tracks in service, both of which are necessary to comply with the established frequencies, although only track 1 is equipped for the exit of vehicles, so the other is left for the execution of maneuvers.
Together with the improvement of the maneuvering capacity in the underground section through which Lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Alicante Tram circulate, this intervention “favors the regularity of the service”, since “the effects of possible incidents” on all trains and trams in circulation.
The works also affect the track superstructure, platform drainage, catenary and the ventilation system of the existing tunnel between Luceros and Mercado. In addition to these actions, another series of works will be carried out that affect interlocks, points and modifications to the signaling, communications and security systems already installed.
The Alicante Tram was used by 18,267,803 users in 2023, the largest record in its history, 37% higher than the previous year’s figure, that is, 4.9 million more users than in 2022. This represents an average daily which is around 50,048 travelers. This average doubled on the days with the highest traffic, coinciding with the Hogueras festivities: San Juan Day, June 24, with 102,852 passengers, followed by the previous day, June 23, with 101,402 and the 22nd of the same month, with 91,393 users.
