The film festival La Inesperada opens its third edition this March 1 and until the 5th at the Filmoteca de Catalunya with a double premiere session in Catalonia, the Icelandic short film Nest directed by Hlynur Pálmason and the Thai feature film Scala directed by Ananta Thitanat .
This year, the event directed and programmed by the filmmaker Núria Giménez Lorang and the programmer and cultural manager Miquel Martí Freixas, highlights the visit of the Iranian artist and filmmaker Maryam Tafakory and the filmmaker Carlos Pardo Ros, as well as the presence of films from countries with unusual cinematographies in Spain.
This is the case of Nous, etudiánts!, an astonishing youthful portrait of the Central African Republic; Scala, the story of the disappearance of a majestic cinema in Bangkok or Vaychiletik, the family chronicle of a musician with divine orders in Tzotzil Mayan territory, in Chiapas.
Among other proposals, the festival will show the recovery of films by Japanese filmmaker Haneda Sumiko, born in 1926, a pioneering woman in Asian cinema, accompanying the session with an exhibition by the researchers responsible for its rediscovery.
La Inesperada is focused on non-fiction and understands non-fiction practices as a free and wide territory, offering a formal range where there is room from cinema to visual arts. It claims the cinematographic experience in front of the internet and is held in person at the Filmoteca de Catalunya and at the Zumzeig Cinema.
Faced with the avalanche of present audiovisual content, La Inesperada proposes a comprehensive, concise festival where all the sessions are carefully programmed. In this way, this year it proposes 7 sessions made up of a total of 18 films. In addition to its programme, it also presents the EXIT activity, a space for debate for Catalan production projects in the process of development.
This year, five projects have been selected for the EXIT section: Fossils of the White Sea by Lina Gorbaneva; Kikol Grau War Tourism; Patarinos from Zeltia Outeiriño; Kao Mali List by Manel Raga and El projecte Pisoft by Rubén Seca. The activity will have a committee of experts made up of three prestigious professionals such as the Berlinale programmer James Lattimer, the producer and filmmaker Lluís Miñarro and the producer and director Serrana Torres.
