The moon is much more important to birds than we might think. For example, they adapt to the lunar cycle when they migrate.
The crescent moon responds to the first appearance of the moon in the sky two days after the new moon has occurred.
It receives this crescent moon name because the illuminated portion is increasing with the passing of the days.
As a curiosity, it should be noted that, in the northern hemisphere, the right side of the moon appears illuminated, while in the southern hemisphere it is the left side.
