The Generalitat has asked the Tarragona City Council to close the only space for dogs on a city beach. The mayor, Rubén Viñuales (PSC), opened a provisionally enabled area on the Miracle beach on July 10. The City Council had not requested any permission from the Department of Territory for a special use of this sandbank, something that is done every year in spring. So in the Tarragona City Council, ERC, Junts and the CUP were in charge.
Without having the aforementioned permit, Territori, with powers to regulate temporary uses on Catalan beaches, has urged the City Council to remove the signage in the space reserved for dogs at one end of Miracle beach, the most urban from Tarragona. It is an area of ??220 meters where dogs have to be on a leash to walk on the sand or enter the sea.
The Generalitat, as the Diari de Tarragona advanced, has given ten days to close the space to the City Council, which yesterday sent its allegations to Territori, which paralyzes the procedure until the Generalitat resolves the case.
“It is not a beach for dogs or the start of an activity that requires a permit from the Generalitat; we can do it by virtue of our powers. It has surprised us. We have acted correctly”, replies Sandra Ramos (PSC), Councilor for Animal Welfare.
The will of the City Council for the coming summers is to create a stable beach for dogs. The provisional solution has been adopted to comply with an electoral commitment by the new mayor. In the Miracle, an area for dogs was created in 2021, with the mayor Ricomà (ERC), but a storm took the arena in 2022 and the space became impractical.
