The Government, through the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has started the dune restoration works on the beaches of Cubelles. As explained in a press release, the proposed maintenance actions mainly affect the Mota de Sant Pere beach, although they have been divided into three sectors that go from south to north.
Sector 1 includes the Foix thermal power plant and surroundings, as well as the beaches of Les Gavines and Les Salines. The start of work in this area is pending the dismantling of the old Foix thermal power station, which will affect the configuration of the beaches.
The works in Sector 2 go from the thermal power station to Rovira i Virgili street. It includes a section of Playa de la Mota de San Pere.
In sector 3, from Rovira i Virgili street to the mouth of the Foix river, action will also be taken on a section of the Mota de Sant Pere beach.
The Mota de Sant Pere beach, therefore, has been divided into two sectors. The actions planned in sectors two and three are the extraction of invasive species from the dune cord; the extension of the dune area towards the sea zone with planting of primary dune species (this action is conditioned on the availability of the species in the nursery of the General Directorate in Cantabria and the state of the beach and the available width); and the closure of the dune areas with a post and rope.
The planting of dune species will take place between March or April. Therefore, the forecast of the Demarcation of Coasts is to execute, in a first phase, the complete sector 2. In sector 3, only the invasive species would be removed, leaving the plantation with psammophilous species for the following season.
The expected duration of the work is seven weeks. The budget for action in sector two amounts to 65,899.45 euros. The removal of invaders from sector three amounts to 12,730.40 euros.
