In these images in La Vanguardia Readers’ Photos we can contemplate the movements of the goose in the smoking Ter, in Manlleu (Osona), as if it were playing in the river in the midst of the Arctic smoke phenomenon.

Arctic smoke is produced by the difference in temperature of the water and the air mass. It occurs when rivers, lakes, reservoirs or even the sea are at a much milder temperature than the air at certain times of the day, especially at dawn, as in this case in Manlleu.

Smoke is produced in this contact zone between the different temperatures of water and air, giving rise to this spectacular, ghostly phenomenon.

The Ter river rises in Ulldeter at 2,480 meters of altitude, at the foot of a glacial cirque in the Pyrenean region of Ripollès, very close to the town of Setcases.

Manlleu, in the Osona region, is crossed by the Ter river, on whose left bank most of the urban center is located.

In Passeig del Ter you can see the canal, very important in the history of Manlleu. And the industrialization of the municipality, which took place in the mid-19th century, contributed significantly to the construction of the industrial canal, which served as a source of energy for the textile factories that began to be installed.

In the photographs we can see that not only the goose, but other varied birds approach the Ter River, which provides them with everything they need to live. Many of them, despite being migratory, nest in this area and are now staying.
