The Golden Globes kick off the 2024 premiere season this Sunday with all eyes on blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer. As for the competition between series, the fourth and final season of Succession, The Crown or The Last of Us are among the favorites.
Although in 2023 the gala sought to recover the lost prestige as a result of an investigation that accused the now-defunct Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) of corruption and lack of diversity among its members, the broadcast obtained the worst numbers in its history.
Now, with new owners, voters, categories and its return to the American television channel CBS, the Golden Globes, which will take place in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles (USA), will seek to turn the page on the murky chapter of its history.
In addition, it will be the first Hollywood celebration after the turbulent year that the American entertainment industry faced due to the strikes of actors and screenwriters, who together demanded a series of labor improvements from the large studios and streaming platforms.
Greta Gerwig’s feminist satire ‘Barbie’ is the production that garners the most nominations of the night with nine. The film about the iconic Mattel doll is emerging as the favorite in the category of best comedy or musical film, which also includes films such as ‘Poor Creatures’, by Yorgos Lanthimos, and ‘American Fiction’, by Cord Jefferson.
In addition, it has three chances to win best original song thanks to the songs led by Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and Ryan Gosling, and is also up for the award for best screenplay.
Gerwig’s film led the international box office, accumulating more than 1,441 million dollars, becoming the most lucrative film in the history of Warner Bros., so it could also win the newly added award for cinematic and box office success, which also contemplate ‘Oppenheimer’ or the music documentary ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’.
Margot Robbie, who played Barbie, is also a tough contender in the category of best comedy actress, where she will face renowned actresses such as Natalie Portman (Secrets of a Scandal), Emma Stone (Poor Things) or Jennifer Lawrence (No bad roll).
The other hit of the summer, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and veteran director Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, will maintain a tight competition in the best drama film category.
The film about the creator of the atomic bomb accumulated eight award nominations, while Scorsese’s epic Western received seven, the same number of chances to win a Golden Globe that Lanthimos’ science fiction comedy will have.
Gerwig, Nolan, Scorsese and Lanthimos will have a fierce battle for the best director award, which also includes less experienced directors such as Bradley Cooper and his second film, Maestro, or Celine Song with her debut film Past Lives.
Leonardo DiCaprio, and his leading role in Killers on the Moon, Cooper with his interpretation of the conductor Leonard Bernstein and Cillian Murphy in his role as the theoretical physicist Robert Oppenheimer will compete for the Golden Globe for best drama actor.
Other artists nominated at the gala are Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Meryl Streep (who in this edition broke her record as the most nominated actress in the history of the awards by accumulating 33 throughout her career), Timothée Chalamet, Willem Dafoe or Nicolas Cage, among others.
The ceremony, presented by the American comedian Jo Koy, could have a Hispanic and Latin moment if the film The Snow Society emerges victorious, the return to Spanish of the Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, or if the Chilean Pedro Pascal is crowned as best drama series actor for his work on The Last of Us.
However, the television category pools predict that the winning series of the night will be the fourth and final season of Succession (Apple TV), which starts with nine nominations, including best drama series, a title that will debate with The Crown. (Netflix), the first series to be nominated for the Golden Globes in each of its seasons.
Also nominated for best dramatic television series are The Diplomat, The Last of Us, 1923 and Ther Morning Show.
Meanwhile, The Bear (Hulu) and Only Murders in the Building (Hulu), with five nominations each, stand out among those chosen for best comedy or musical series.
