The fishing instinct of Roses shearwaters

In La Vanguardia Readers’ Photos we can see shearwaters flying near the water, images that I was able to capture in the port of Roses, in the Alt Empordà region.

This water bird feeds on fish and sometimes follows fishing boats to eat part of the catch that goes overboard, like in the images I captured. A bird that is in recession.

These birds are most common in temperate and icy waters. They fly with long wings, gliding through the air with minimal effort, as can be seen in the photographs, and are capable of traveling great distances.

They can live many years. Shearwaters go to islands and cliffs to nest, especially at night, but without much moonlight to avoid predators. They nest in burrows where they lay a single white egg.

They also feed on squid and the like. There are those that follow the whales to feed on the fish that appear on the surface after their passage.
