February’s meteorological gift, with two spectacular false suns or parhelios captured in Gavà, in the Baix Llobregat, from where they have been seen above the Garraf massif, as seen in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia.
Parhelions are very similar to halos (in fact they can and usually happen at the same time), they appear around 22º to the left or right of the sun as bright and even colorful spots in the sky.
The massif of Garraf rises in the Cordillera Litoral Catalana. It occupies a triangular area between the Llobregat valley, the Penedès depression and the Mediterranean.
It forms a group of low mountains. Orographically it goes from sea level to 593 meters from the top of Morella.
The Garraf massif loses height towards the west and disappears near Vendrell, where the coastal depression is limited by the sea. The mountains are limestone with many chasms and caves. And the palmetto is an endemic species in this area.
