On Sunday morning the president of the PPCV, Carlos Mazón, found himself in the river when he went out for a run with José María Aznar who was doing his series and Mariano Rajoy who was practicing his peculiar march. The PP intermunicipal that closed in Valencia over the weekend has served to unite the party and bring together two former presidents of the Government and has triggered optimism in the PP at all levels.
So much so that the national president, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, did not hesitate in his speech at the closing meeting to claim both Mazón and María José Catalá for absolute majorities to govern without the need for agreements in the Valencian Community and the Valencia City Council .
Without the pageantry of yesteryear, but with the 4,000 seats occupied and people in the surrounding area, the Valencian PP once again offered Genoa an idyllic setting at the Museum of Arts and Sciences to stage that reunion and image of unity that the party longed for before the start of the new electoral cycle.
And it is that the euphoria seems to have settled in the PP of the Valencian Community. The internal surveys smile at them and they are convinced that they will turn around the current situation as of May 28. Sources from the formation explained that the best numbers are obtained in Valencia city where they see Catalá very close to the commanding rod.
In addition, at the regional level, they are “fired” in Alicante with 14 deputies and the best thing for the PP is that they get them at the cost of stealing votes from the PSPV and not from Vox; and it is that in the end the important thing is that the sum of the block (either the one on the left or the one on the right) exceeds the other. In 2019, the popular ones stayed, in this province, with seven deputies, for 10 of the PSPV. Although the trend in Alicante was already good, the water seems to have made the PP rebound in the latest tracking.
All in all, it must be said that they are part surveys and that the data handled by the governing parties indicate just the opposite and put on the table the firm possibility that there may be a third legislature of the Botànic.
Figures aside, the sensations around Carlos Mazón are very good. They believe that they have closed a “great week” that began with the confirmation of him as a candidate for the province of Alicante; It had in between the strategic signing of Ruth Merino -which yesterday Mazón himself valued taking advantage of the presence of the former spokesperson for Ciudadanos at the closing rally- and ended with the intermunicipal and the gestures of support from the barons to the Valencian PP.
The incorporation of Merino is very symbolic in a PP that wants to keep most of those 470,000 Valencians who voted for the orange formation in the last regional elections. In addition, it gives him credentials before the PSPV, which also seeks to broaden its base in the center of the ideological spectrum.
However, the most important thing for the aspirations of Mazón and Catalá is that the brand at the national level be very strong and take them up until the elections. It must be remembered that, when the time comes, the fact that the PP candidate is not too well known is minor, since less than 50% of Valencians will choose their ballot thinking about their own issues and, furthermore, close to 54% will vote to some acronyms and only 32% will do it for a candidate. Some figures that even more match the duel between Ximo Puig and Carlos Mazón.
