The 84-year-old woman who was found dead last weekend in a tomb in the Torrero cemetery in Zaragoza could have taken her own life by ingesting pills and alcohol, of which police sources confirm that remains were found in the vicinity of the niche.
The disappearance of Rosa María Giménez, as this woman was called, was reported last New Year’s Day by her family. Since then, no one had news of her whereabouts, and posters about the search for her could be seen in several streets of the Aragonese capital in the hope of finding her alive.
After almost a hundred days without news from him, an employee of the Torrero cemetery who went to carry out work last Friday in the old part of the cemetery, one of the least frequented and where there is hardly any traffic, noticed a “strong smell.” which led him to a grave.
According to police sources, the elderly woman’s body was found there, in an advanced state of decomposition, lying on a niche with a half-broken tombstone. “It was very difficult to see if you didn’t look closely,” the agents say. Immediately afterwards, around 8:00 in the morning, he notified the National Police, who traveled to the scene and guarded the area until her body was removed.
The advanced state of decomposition that the body presented made it difficult to identify the body at first, although it was later confirmed that it was that of the missing woman.
The agents, who ruled out a violent death, also claim that traces of alcohol and medication blisters were found in the vicinity of the grave, which is why they suggest that it could have been a suspected suicide.
After spending New Year’s Eve with her daughter, the woman left the home the next day and was never seen or heard from again. Her family reported her disappearance to the National Police and the Sos Desaparecidos association echoed it, asking for citizen help to locate her given her “high vulnerability.” Since she lost track of her, no banking transactions had occurred and she did not carry a mobile phone.
