The two killed by shotgun fire in a rural area of Irún were partners and neighbors, but all indications point to one of them ending up shooting the other and then committing suicide. The first hypothesis of the investigation gains strength as the investigations progress and the ballistics tests show what happened. The environment of the victims also confirms a climate of confrontation between the two partners over the management of a common business, a situation that would have been the trigger for the tragedy.
Specifically, the hypothesis that sources familiar with the investigation take for granted is that Josu Rekalde, 53, would have killed Ignacio Ãbrego, 47, with a hunting rifle. Later, Rekalde would have committed suicide in the same place of the crime.
The events occurred in the rural neighborhood of Olaberria, an area located a few kilometers from the border city of Irún. Rekalde and Ãbrego owned two hamlets located just 500 meters away. In the middle of these hamlets there are some industrial pavilions in which they ran a business, a motorhome park. The management of this business motivated the discussion and the crime occurred right there.
Around 10:00 a.m., the two partners had met there and, apparently, they had a heated discussion related to the terms on which they rented the pavilion to the owners of the motorhomes.
After 11:30 a.m., a relative of Josu Rekalde found the two bodies inside the pavilion, each one with a shot, and notified the Ertzaintza. The Basque Police could only confirm the deaths.
During today’s session, autopsies will be carried out, which will shed more light on the circumstances of the crime. In any case, the initial hypothesis of Ãbrego’s murder at the hands of Rekalde has all the signs of being confirmed.
Ignacio Ãbrego was married and the father of a child. Josu Rekalde, for his part, was married and had two daughters. In the case of the latter, some media have pointed out that in recent months he had suffered a serious hunting accident that had left him with serious consequences.
