The director of the IVAM, Nuria Enguita, has just announced that she has presented her resignation to the Vice President of the Generalitat and Minister of Culture, Vicente Barrera. In the note released, he points out that “in view of the complaint made by the Generalitat Valenciana and the continued attacks against me based on falsified information, it is evident that I do not have the support of the Valencian government. Given this situation and to avoid further damage to the museum, I have decided to make this decision.
The Valencian Government has announced that it is going to report to the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Valencia the possible commission of a criminal offense by the director of the IVAM after having learned that she could have made a “pure” or remunerative donation in favor of one of the members. of the court that appointed her in 2020, the critic Vicente Todolí.
In the information published by media such as El Español, ABC and El Mundo, it is stated that the director of the IVAM – appointed during the time of the Botànic government and the only candidate for the position – would have donated, in 2022, two farms to Todolí in a municipality of the Valencian Community.
Enguita sent a statement this Monday to several media outlets in which she denounced being the victim of a “smear campaign” against her “on a strictly private matter” and stated that such a donation was made to the Todolí Citrus Fundació de la Comunitat Valenciana, “a foundation “non-profit organization for the defense of the environment and socio-cultural that includes research, dissemination and defense of the cultivation of traditional citrus fruits in the Valencian Community, under the tutelage of the Protectorate exercised by the Generalitat.”
Today he presented his resignation. In the statement he points out that “last week the thirty-five years of the IVAM were successfully celebrated and it was demonstrated that the institution is at its best moment in the last twenty-five years. It does not seem a coincidence that the malicious attacks against me coincide with the moment of maximum social visibility of the museum”.
And he adds that “the recovery work with which I began my management is on track, now it is the responsible teams and the citizens who have to defend the institutions, given the fragility to which they are subjected by political-media interests.”
In September 2020, Nuria Enguita was elected the new director of the IVAM, a museum she knew as a curator between 1991 and 1998. She achieved the responsibility after a brilliant career as the person in charge and manager of spaces such as the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona or more recently Bombas Gens. in Valencia.
Historian and curator of numerous exhibitions in Spain, as well as three international biennials (Frankfurt, Medellín and São Paulo), she had scheduled a group of exhibitions for this year, using the museum’s funds, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the institution. cultural.
