The seven people who remained hospitalized this Tuesday, as a result of the injuries suffered in the accident of a bus on Monday on the highway of the Lakes of Covadonga, are evolving favorably, according to the Asturian Government. The accident apparently occurred when the bus came across another vehicle – a motorhome, according to some sources – and left the road until it lost stability and took two turns downhill. There were six serious injuries, another six less serious and 37 minor. Among the 48 passengers, in addition to the driver, there were ten children between eight months and 13 years of age, although none of them suffered serious injuries.
The Civil Guard investigates the facts. “The experts carry out a lot of analysis, photographs and collect all the evidence to reach the conclusion of what was the reason for the accident,” explained Alberto Aguilera, head of operations of the Benemérita in Asturias. The investigation will take some time, he specified, because the witnesses are dispersed, at their homes or admitted to hospitals in Asturias. In accordance with the protocol, the driver, one of the most seriously injured, underwent a blood test to confirm or rule out the presence of alcohol or drugs.
One of the points to be clarified is whether the bus became destabilized after stopping on the right side of the road when it came across another vehicle, according to some passengers. Aguilera pointed out that the average width of this mountain road is 5.35 m, although there are parts where it is not so narrow, for example in viewpoint areas, where a greater width is usually used for the crossing of large vehicles. size. Due to the high influx of visitors, in summer the circulation of private vehicles is limited, and taxi drivers and bus drivers are “accustomed to driving”, as evidenced by the fact that every day there are “hundreds of maneuvers” for the crossing of vehicles without mishaps, said Aguilar.
