Tor is a small town in the Catalan Pyrenees, which belongs to the municipality of Alins, in the region of Pallars Sobirà. It barely has twenty inhabitants, but it has been highly coveted for its strategic location on the border with Andorra.
Much has been written about his value, especially after he became famous for a gruesome and very long story about the ownership of the mountain that led to three murders.
The etymological origin of Tor would be linked to “hill”. And this mountain is very strategic, not only because it is one of the passes between Andorra and Spain passing through the Port de Cabús, at 2301 meters of altitude (smugglers used the port for smuggling, especially tobacco), but also because, on the Andorran side, there are the ski resorts of La Massana and Vallnord.
As seen in this report in La Vanguardia Readers’ Photos, Tor has houses scattered at the foot of the Roc de Sant Pere mountain. It is located in the most remote and lonely place in the Vall Ferrera, at the confluence of two ravines; the Riu de la Rabassa and the Vallpeguera (from the union of both the Noguera de Tor is formed).
The town was located at the bottom of a valley that widens in this place, framed by high mountains, such as the Pic de Sanfonts (2882 meters high), which separate the Vall Ferrera from the valleys of Andorra.
Today it is reached by a 12 kilometer paved mountain track that starts at the northern end of Alins. When we look at the silhouette of the town, the parish church of Sant Pere stands out.
