The Costa Brava Girona Water Consortium, made up of the Diputación de Girona and 47 municipalities, has approved the construction of a water purification plant in L’Escala, Alt Empordà (Girona).

The facility will be built on the land of Mas Martí, in the east of the town, in a space of 5,851 square meters.

The work has a budget of 7,316,647.50 euros, which will be financed with own funds and with a subsidy from the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) that reaches 1.9 million euros (MEUR).

With the new station, the quality of the water will be improved, which at some point has offered parameters of iron, manganese and chlorides. It will also have an initial treatment capacity of 583 cubic meters per hour with the possibility of expanding up to 875.

L’Escala is supplied by four active wells and a fifth in reserve. The water is pushed through pipes to storage tanks, where it is treated for distribution. There are four deposits, two are in the Pedró area and another two in Puig Sec, in Montgó.

The water treatment line of the new plant will include prior oxidation with potassium permanganate, aeration, rapid mixing with coagulant, flocculation, decantation, filtration, disinfection with ultraviolet rays and, subsequently, disinfection with chlorine.

The construction of two tanks is planned, one for filtered water and another for washing water recovery.

The project includes a main building with a prefabricated structure. Inside, it is planned to install a decanter, a work area with the possibility of hosting a future new filtration line, sand filters, recovery tanks, cleaning water and treated water, disinfection, chlorine rooms, electrical panels, a workshop and a generating set, the drive to municipal tanks, the control area, the chemical rooms of the arrival work and the sludge dehydration and, finally, the auxiliary services of the plant.

The consortium estimates that the execution period for the works, which will be distributed in different phases – the first will be the preliminary work and the arrival work and the main building – will be approximately sixteen months.
